Adding a category description to your category pages

Follow

By default, your category pages will display the category title and your category posts (depending on the theme)-- yet no summary. If you'd like to add a bit of category description text on each of your category pages, it's quite easy!

Note: Please make sure you have a child theme installed and setup prior to following these directions. Your theme "Install the Theme" directions cover setting up a Child Theme.

You will also want an unzipped copy of your theme files on hand on your computer as well as install and activate the plugin WP Editor on your site.

Create Post Category Descriptions

1.To create your descriptions for each Category, navigate to WordPress Dashboard > Posts > Categories >

2. Click 'Edit' for the category you would like to add a description to.

3. Enter your desired description text into the form titled "Description" and click "Update" when finished.

Upload file to your Child theme

1. Go to Appearance > Theme Editor

2. On the right side of the screen look for the Upload Files section.

3. Click the Browse button and from your unzipped theme folder, find the category.php file. Select the file and upload it by clicking the Upload File button.

4. You will receive the following success message:

5. The category.php file will now be listed under the Theme Files on the right. Click on the file to open it.

Add the Code

1. Find the following code:

            <div class="archive-box">

                <span><?php _e( 'Browsing Category', 'quebella' ); ?></span>
                <h1><?php printf( __( '%s', 'quebella' ), single_cat_title( '', false ) ); ?></h1>

            </div>

2. On the blank line right BELOW this bit of code, copy and paste the following

<div class="category-description"><p><?php echo category_description(); ?></p></div>

3. Be sure to save the changes to the file when you're finished by clicking the Update File button.

Add some styles:

1. Lastly, copy and paste the following into Appearance > Customize > Custom CSS

.category-description {text-align: center; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;}

2. Be sure to save when you're finished.
